What We Do |
At The Yellin Center for Student Success, our clinical team, led by Dr. Paul Yellin, is committed to helping students, their families, and their teachers understand each student’s learning profile from a neurodevelopmental perspective. We believe that having insight into how a student learns is critical to creating the appropriate set of solutions to remedy or work around a particular area of difficulty.
Our individualized learning plans leverage personal strengths and offer support throughout the process of implementing strategies at home and school. Multiple clinicians assess the child individually and integrate their findings as a team to provide a comprehensive profile of a child’s strengths and weaknesses that is directly linked to academic performance. Our assessment is not limited to standardized batteries, but can be individualized to identify a child’s specific needs. The process is dynamic and highly interactive.
We look carefully at each of the functions of the brain that affect the ways a student learns as well as performs in school—functions such as memory, language, attention, neuromotor functions, social cognition, and higher order cognition (the ability to solve problems, or think critically).
Next, in a process called "demystification," students and their families receive immediate, clear explanations of our preliminary findings. A clinician carefully explains to the student and parents the connections between the student's neurodevelopmental strengths and weaknesses and his/her academic performance. This empowering and respectful process allows students to be a part of the solution and also helps them feel more confident about themselves.
The student’s learning profile and a learning plan are detailed in a report provided several weeks after the assessment. In this report, we describe the linkages between the student’s neurodevelopmental profile and academic skills. This description explains, in very specific terms, why a student is struggling with an aspect of school.
The assessment fee also includes a report consultation and, if desired, a conference call with your child’s teacher(s) and/or tutor(s). At the report consultation, parents have an opportunity to review the report with us, seek clarification about our findings and strategies, and plan for the implementation of our recommendations. The report consultation can take place in our office or via telephone, at the parents’ request.
