At The Yellin Center for Student Success, the assessment day concludes with an immediate feedback session called demystification. Clinicians meet with students and their families to discuss the initial findings from the assessment. During demystification, the student's specific strengths and weaknesses are explained, including their relation to academic performance, and initial strategies are discussed.
The demystification process is a unique part of The Yellin Center's assessment. Providing this immediate feedback empowers students by including them in the solution process. Many students often express relief that someone finally understands how they learn. Demystification encourages optimism and collaboration among students, parents and teachers, and can restore motivation by giving students a positive vision of their future. Students who understand their learning profile are far better prepared to implement strategies and can also better recognize and appreciate individual differences in others.
Parents of younger students can rest assured that the nature of demystification is extremely constructive and positive. While the focus of demystification is on the student, we will take time to meet with parents separately to discuss any concerns which may be beyond a student's ability to appropriately understand when indicated.
