How Our
Assessments are
Different |
- We are truly interdisciplinary. After our pediatricians, psychologists and learning specialists work with each child individually, they meet to compare observations and findings. This collaboration enables us to gain a real understanding of your child and how he or she learns. We can then pinpoint specific areas of strength and weakness and determine how they are linked to your child’s academic performance. Our clinicians understand the impact that differences in learning can have on a child, and we are committed to helping students experience success in school and in life – children tell us all the time that they feel like they’re finally in a place where people understand them.
- We provide profiles, not labels. Because traditional labels are broad and general (such as “dyslexia” or “ADD”), they are not sufficient for understanding each child’s needs. They can impose preconceived limitations on a child. We develop a neurodevelopmental profile for each student that helps us pinpoint exactly where the breakdowns in learning occur, so we can devise specific recommendations to overcome them.
- We identify strengths and affinities – not just weaknesses. Learning how to develop our strengths is crucial to being successful in life – and to overcoming weaknesses.
- Parents observe their child’s entire assessment. Observing the assessment provides insight that can help parents understand the way their child learns and how best to implement our learning plan.
- Understanding is immediate. Through a process we call “demystification,”we begin talking to students and parents about what we are finding, both during and immediately after the assessment – in simple, easy-to-understand language. We follow up with a detailed written report, but families don’t have to wait weeks for feedback – they leave that day with new insights and specific recommendations.
- We provide Implementation Support. Each family receives a comprehensive learning plan that focuses on what the student, parents, and teachers can do at home and at school to improve performance. Our assessment includes a meeting with our clinicians after families have had a chance to review the report, to address questions and discuss how to implement the learning plan.
