How Our Assessments are Different

The Interdisciplinary Model

A medical doctor and a learning specialist work with each student individually. The clinicians collaborate throughout the assessment process in order to gain a deep understanding of the student's learning profile. Clinicians at The Yellin Center for Student Success understand the impact that differences in learning can have on a child and are committed to helping students experience success in school and in life.

Profiles Provide More Information than Labels

Because traditional labels are broad and general (such as "dyslexia" or "ADD"), they do not always supply adequate information for understanding each student's specific needs. Clinicians at The Yellin Center develop a neurodevelopmental profile of learning constructs for each student that helps pinpoint breakdowns in learning and devise recommendations that can help a student improve academic achievement.

Finding Students' Strengths

Showing a student their strengths through the assessment process is a very powerful experience and can even increase the student's motivation to improve weaknesses.

Parents Are Part of the Process

Parents observe the entire assessment at The Yellin Center.  Observing the assessment provides insight that can help parents understand the way their child learns and how best to implement strategies from the learning plan.

Immediate Feedback

Most assessments only supply written feedback weeks or even months after an assessment is completed.  At The Yellin Center, feedback occurs on the day of the assessment during demystification. The student is an integral part of the feedback process, and information is presented in a developmentally appropriate manner.

Implementation Support

Support from The Yellin Center for Student Success continues after the assessment day. Each family will receive a comprehensive written report that details the student's specific learning profile. The report also contains a learning plan which suggests strategies for parents, students, and teachers to implement in order to enhance academic success. Clinicians and families meet to review the report, address questions, and discuss how to implement strategies from the learning plan.

A Pediatric Approach

A medical and neurological examination is a component of every assessment performed at The Yellin Center. Unlike typical neuropsychological testing performed by psychologists, a medical doctor oversees all aspects of our assessment and can help make sense of how complex medical issues may be affecting learning, as well as advise about and prescribe medications if indicated.
