What to Expect |
Once your appointment for an assessment has been scheduled, what can you expect?
Our assessments take place over the course of a full day. We generally ask that you arrive at our Center at about 8:30 or 9 am and you can usually expect to be finished by 4 pm. We are located in midtown Manhattan, convenient to parking, public transportation and many hotels. Find out more about our location and how to arrange your visit.
• |
Your day will begin with a tour of our facility, during which you will be shown the Family Room which will be set aside for your exclusive use during your day at the Center. You will also meet the members of your child's assessment team.
• |
During the course of the day, every family will meet with Dr. Paul Yellin for a general discussion of their concerns and for a physical exam of your child, including a review of his or her medical history and a neurological assessment. Each child will also have a vision and hearing screening.
• |
Students will spend much of the morning working with a learning specialist and neurodevelopmentalist, while parents observe the entire process from the Family Room on our closed circuit monitor. Breaks and snacks are provided.
• |
Your family will then have a break for lunch while our clinical team meets to review their findings and to determine your child's neurodevelopmental profile as well as prepare our initial recommendations.
• |
After your break you will meet with the learning specialist or other
member(s) of the assessment team for demystification to provide immediate feedback, including our preliminary findings and recommendations.
• |
Following the day of your visit, the assessment team will further review their findings and will prepare a detailed written report that includes a description of your child's learning profile, linkages between your child's learning profile and school performance, a detailed learning plan that includes specific recommendations for home and school, and a summary of our findings.
• |
Once you have reviewed the report you will have the opportunity to meet with our learning specialist to discuss the report, our recommendations, and implementation. On request, we can also have a telephone conference with your child's teacher or tutor to discuss your child's learning profile and the recommendations in our learning plan. |
