New York State Eliminates the "IEP Diploma"
Effective for the 2013-14 school year, New York State has officially eliminated the “IEP Diploma”, which was never a diploma but simply a certificate for students with significant disabilities that indicated that they met the goals in their IEP. It is being replaced by the New York State (NYS) Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential. This credential is also available to students with IEPs who are graduating with Regents or local diplomas and who wish to provide potential employers with documentation that they are exiting school with demonstrated knowledge and experience for entry-level employment. Learn More about Special Education Advocacy
Parents have asked us how they can learn more about special education advocacy to better understand the process and procedures they encounter in their child's school, or to work with other parents as an advocate. Two resources we can recommend are the books and programs from Peter and Pam Wright, available at wrightslaw.com and the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA), which has a helpful website, listserv's for parents and lay advocates, and an excellent annual conference.
