College Counseling and Transition Guidance

College Counseling and Transition Services

Our Director of Advocacy and College Counseling Services, Susan Yellin, Esq., has extensive experience working with students with learning  and other difficulties who are finishing high school and looking for a college or other post-secondary setting where they can gain the tools they need for their adult life.  She is the co-author of the award-winning book Life After High School: A Guide for Students with Disabilities and their Families.

We offer consultations and services with Mrs. Yellin for families who are beginning to consider life beyond high school. We will discuss steps they may need to take before they begin this journey, what they may need to do along the way, and how to ensure that each student finds a program to meet his or her needs and obtains the supports necessary for academic and personal success. An assessment from The Yellin Center is not a prerequisite for college counseling services.

An Initial Consultation with Mrs. Yellin includes completion of an intake form, and review of relevant documents – IEPs, SAT/ACT scores, report cards, etc. The consultation itself, which takes place after Mrs. Yellin has reviewed the documentation, lasts approximately one hour. For many families, this Initial Consultation will suffice to help them decide what will be the best setting after high school, which colleges might have programs that are a good fit for their student, and what they need to do and consider as they visit schools and prepare applications.

An Initial Consultation with Susan Yellin, Esq. will include:
  • Setting out the legal and practical differences between high school and college
  • Discussion about the kind of post-high school program that will be the best fit for the student
  • Specific program suggestions
  • SAT/ACT issues and accommodations
  • Whether, when, and how to disclose a learning or other disability
  • What to ask college representatives
  • How and when to apply for college accommodations

For families seeking support beyond an initial consultation, additional services are available.

Mrs. Yellin is an attorney with over 25 years of legal experience, and has worked in the field of education and educational advocacy for over a decade. She is the parent of three sons.
