The Yellin Center Newsletter: Winter 2011
As another exciting year at The Yellin Center comes to an end, we would like to look back at some of our favorite moments of 2011 and look ahead to upcoming developments for 2012.
2011 has been a year of collaborations! We conducted extensive professional development training at nonprofits such as The New York Institute for Special Education and Cornerstone Literacy, as well as at numerous public and private schools in the New York metropolitan area. Dr. Yellin worked with Annenberg Learner to create a module for their Neuroscience & the Classroom: Making Connections professional development program, and with the Hamilton Central School District in upstate New York to present the promising findings of their recent work together on Response-to-Intervention. We were thrilled to be able to provide pro bono evaluations for students served by the terrific organization Advocates for Children of New York.
Our Yellin Center family has grown this year, with the addition of new Learning Specialists Beth Guadagni, M.A. and Lindsay Levy, Ed.M. -- not to mention a couple of very cute babies!
Of course, The Yellin Center is best known for innovation in evaluation and support services for students and families who are managing learning difficulties. In 2011, we evaluated students from points all across the globe, and we are grateful for the many opportunities we have had to connect and collaborate with schools and educators from institutions of every kind, to help design supportive learning environments for the students we evaluate. This year, we worked with more college and graduate students than ever before, and hope to continue to expand this rewarding work.
It has been a winning year in another way, as well, as Life After High School, co-authored by Susan Yellin, Esq., our Director of Advocacy and Transition Services, was awarded bronze medals in the category "Best Education Book of the Year" from two different organizations – Independent Publisher, whose “IPPY" Awards recognize the best books from small publishing companies, and ForeWord Reviews, which selected its award winners from entries from more than 350 publishers.
We wish all of you a very happy holiday and a wonderful new year, and look forward to working with you to support students, families, schools, and educators in the coming year and for many years to come!
What's New At The Yellin Center
We are pleased to welcome our new neighbor here on the 12th floor, Terry Edelstein, Ph.D., a nationally-recognized Academic and Executive Function coach. Dr. Edelstein works with students of all ages and with adults, to help them develop and implement strategies for academic interventions and executive functions, the problem-solving and organizational skills necessary to reach individual goals. Learn more about Dr. Edelstein's practice here.
Dr. Yellin kicks off another great year of Yellin Center special events with a presentation sponsored by CHADD of New York on January 9 called "Learning and Attention: A Pediatrician’s Perspective on ADHD, Attention, and Learning." Learn more about this free event on NYC's Upper East Side here.

Memory and Learning
Memory is a constellation of functions that enable individuals to capture information, store it for immediate or long term recall, and to efficiently bring it to mind when needed. When any of these functions is not working well, school performance can be affected. Understanding the different aspects of memory and how they work is an important first step to developing strategies to help students succeed.
